Recently, Boogaard's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the National Hockey League claiming it was ultimately responsible for the young man's death due to an accidental drug overdose.

Recent report indicates workplace deaths still an issue

Overall, there is no question that today, workplaces throughout the nation, including the Pittsburgh area, are safer than they were for our ancestors, 100 or even 50 years ago. The improvements are due to many factors including the establishment of safety standards designed to keep workers from harm. Despite these efforts, including the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, work-related deaths occur all too often.

According to a study recently released by the AFL-CIO, throughout the United States, an average of 150 workers die each day either while doing something related to their job or as a result of an illness tied to a job. Work-related illness is actually the biggest culprit, claiming the lives of 137 individuals each day. In creating the report the AFL-CIO relied upon information from two governmental agencies, OSHA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Police officers provide a valuable service to all residents of Western Pennsylvania. Each day they put the needs of those who live in the state ahead of their own in an effort to maintain the peace and safety. While many times they accomplish the tasks associated with their occupation without any mishaps, in other instances accidents occur. In the worst cases these work accidents are fatal.

Sadly a Shenago Township police officer was killed when the vehicle in which he was a passenger was struck by a woman driving erratically in New Castle. The accident occurred after dark one night earlier this month. At the time of the crash, police were reportedly pursing the woman in the vehicle. In addition to her driving the vehicle in a manner described as erratic, police were also aware that her license had been suspended.

Girl finds it difficult to move on from drunk driving accident

The loss of a loved one in an unexpected manner is never easy to deal with. This is particularly true when the death is one that could have been prevented had those involved taken steps to follow the law. An example of this is when someone dies in a car crash caused by a drunk driver.

The best friend of a girl who died five years ago is all too aware of this. The then 12-year-olds were riding together in an automobile that was struck by a car, the driver of which was driving while intoxicated. At the time of the crash, the girls were getting a ride to the home of another friend. The girl died with her head in her best friend's lap.

Stun gun used on nursing home resident suffering from dementia

Most people view nursing homes as a place their loved ones with serious medical conditions can reside, either for the remainder of their lives, or while recovering from serious injuries. In situations where individuals are dealing with serious illness that they will not recover from, the decision to move them into such a facility can be a difficult one. This is true whether the nursing home facility is in the Pittsburgh area or elsewhere in the country.

For those who do decide to move a loved one into a nursing home, the expectation is that the person will receive proper care and will live in a safe environment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and residents may suffer injuries due to the negligence of those who are supposed to be providing that care. This was apparently the case in another state involving a 77-year-old man.
